Import subscribers from a CSV file
Prepare a contact file in the correct column order and import subscribers into a list.
Import a CSV file to add multiple subscribers to an existing list. Use contacts who have agreed to receive your marketing emails.
Prepare your file
Save your contact file as a comma-separated CSV of no more than 2 MB. Use these columns in this order:
emailfirst_namelast_name
The first row must be a header. It is always skipped. Columns are read by position, so changing the header names does not change how columns are imported.
For example:
email,first_name,last_name
alex@example.com,Alex,Rivera
sam@example.com,Sam,
taylor@example.com,,
Email addresses are required. Names are optional. Keep email addresses free of extra spaces and leave missing name values blank.
Import the subscribers
- Open Marketing > Lists.
- Select the destination list. If needed, create a list first.
- Select Import CSV at the bottom of the list.
- Select Choose File and choose your CSV.
- Select Import.
- Check the message showing how many subscribers were imported, then review the list. Imported contacts have Import as their source.
Understand skipped rows
Rows with missing or invalid email addresses are skipped. Addresses already on the destination list are also skipped, including duplicates within the same file. Email addresses are stored in lowercase, so capitalization does not create a separate contact.
Importing adds new subscribers; it does not update existing contacts' names or reactivate unsubscribed or bounced contacts. The number imported may therefore be lower than the number of rows in your file.
If the first contact is missing, check that the file had a header row. If names appear in the wrong fields, check the column order. If the file is too large, split it into smaller CSV files and include a header row in each one.
